Your medication was recalled. Don't stop taking it yet
The instinct is to throw the bottle away. For many medications, that's riskier than the recall itself. Here's the safer path.

The short version
- Don't stop a prescription on your own. Call your pharmacist or doctor first.
- Many drug recalls apply only to specific lots and don't reach the patient level.
- Check the lot number and manufacturer on your bottle against the notice.
- Your pharmacy can often swap in an unaffected supply.
Drug recalls make headlines, and the natural reaction is to stop taking the medication right away. For many conditions, though, suddenly stopping can be more dangerous than the problem that triggered the recall.
Not every recall reaches your medicine cabinet
Drug recalls happen at different levels. Some only pull products from wholesalers or pharmacy shelves, and patients who already have the medication don't need to do anything. Others extend all the way to consumers. The recall notice will say which applies.
How to check your bottle
- Find the drug name, strength and manufacturer on the label. Generic drugs are often made by several companies, and only one may be affected.
- Find the lot number and expiration date. Your pharmacist can look these up if they aren't on the label you have.
- Compare them with the recall notice.
What your pharmacist can do
Pharmacists deal with recalls regularly. They can tell you whether your supply is affected, switch you to a lot or manufacturer that isn't, and contact your doctor if you need an alternative.
Supplements and devices count too
Dietary supplements are recalled for contamination, undeclared drug ingredients or labeling errors. Medical devices, from glucose monitors to blood pressure cuffs, are recalled for malfunctions. Keep track of these alongside your prescriptions.
